What’s your favorite holiday food to make? From stovetop fudge to a hearty roasted turkey, holiday food wouldn’t be possible without kitchen appliances. So what happens if something goes wrong when the big day rolls around?

Don’t get caught unprepared! Add the following holiday home maintenance tasks to your holiday to-do list to make sure your kitchen appliances are ready to bring about the beloved scents and tastes of the holidays.

1. Deep Clean to Prevent Breakdowns

Kitchen appliances are usually reliable, but they’re not perfect. A Consumer Reports survey found that 6 percent of respondents reported problems with cooking elements not lighting or heating up on ranges, while 5 percent of people reported refrigerators that didn’t cool properly. An even larger 11 percent of people said their dishwashers stopped properly cleaning. Yikes!

To prevent any of these roadblocks, consider doing some cleaning:

  • Pull the fridge away from the wall and clean out the dust from the mechanical coils.
  • Deep clean your oven and stovetop and test all heating elements or gas burners to ensure they heat and ignite fully.
  • Clean your dishwasher by setting a single dishwasher-safe cup of white vinegar on the top rack and running a full cycle.

When you complete these extra steps, you’re ready for step 2!

2. Plan a Cooking Test Run

Whether you use your cooking appliances a lot or not, holiday cooking often puts an extra strain on the kitchen. So, a couple of weeks before your holiday meal, turn on the oven to bake up a casserole or make a sheet of brownies. Then load up the dishwasher and make sure even the remnants from the outer crust of the brownies come clean.

Hopefully everything works perfectly, but if not, no worries! When you test everything in advance, you’ll have time to schedule a time for the appliances to be repaired before the day of your small event.
